Work is underway for a new universal access trail at Swedetown. The Swedetown Trails Club has contracted with Rock Solid trail builders to create the two-mile accessible trails.
When completed, the trail will be suitable for use by all people. It will be 36 inches wide with grades of no more than 4%, and periodic passing zones at least 60 inches in width. The final tread will be appropriate for all types of bikes and wheelchairs.
The trail, which will be known as Two Hoots, incorporates portions of the existing Two Hoots, Happy Ending, and Backcountry (a map is below).
This is the first part of a project to improve accessibility at Swedetown. The plan also includes improving the handicap parking spots, and expanding and revamping the chalet so that all public areas are on the ground floor and accessible. The Swedetown Trails Club has a number of grant applications in process to fund the chalet work.
We’ll have detour arrows up for mountain bikers, but in general you can use Valley ski trail to access singletrack intersections and the rest of the trail system. The best source for trail data is Trailforks.
The project is funded by the Swedetown Trails Club, Calumet Township, Visit Keweenaw, and the League of Michigan Bicyclists.
