New Beginner Trail First Step Toward Universal Access
Swedetown has added a two-mile beginner trail. It takes the Two Hoots name and starts and ends at the chalet parking lot. The trail is ideal for beginning mountain bikers of all ages. Rock Solid trail builders performed the construction.
This is the first step in creating a true Universal Access Trail – a non-motorized trail that accommodates wheelchairs, strollers, hand cycles, walkers, and mountain bikes.
The trail meets general accessibility standards, with a width of at least 36 inches and grades of no more than 4 percent. The future step will be to add a crushed gravel or limestone surface, much like rail-trails in other parts of the state and region.
This is part of a larger ongoing effort to make the facilities and trails at Swedetown universally accessible. Other aspects include the parking lot, expanding and revamping the existing chalet, and creating connections between the parts.
The Two Hoots construction was made possible by funding from Swedetown Trails Club members, Calumet Township, Visit Keweenaw, and the League of Michigan Bicyclists.
