Swedetown Recreation Area has more than 25 miles of purpose-built single track mountain bike trails with maps and trail markers. There are some two-tracks good for riding as well. Besides mountain biking, this trail system is enjoyed for nature hikes, dog walking and trail running. The main trailhead is on Osceola Road in Calumet, look for the big welcome sign at the start of the driveway. You will find parking here. Swedetown Chalet lower level is open for fall cyclists and hikers, with restrooms and drinking water. There is another trailhead on Spruce Street in Calumet and a trailhead on M-203, watch for big sign near Cloverland Road. There is no required membership fee. Donations to support trail improvement are very welcome – suggested amount is $5 for a weekend, $25 to be a full-season supporter. Swedetown bike trails are maintained by volunteers. We are looking for volunteers to adopt several mountain bike trails: Uff Dah, Porcupine and Fawn Chase. Adopting a trail means visiting every few weeks to check for leaning trees, encroaching brush or ivy, trimming back tickly ferns and raking slippery leaves off the tread. Says a volunteer “I love going out and walking the trail I’ve adopted to make sure it is in top-notch conditions for riders.” We have equipment and can show you how to use it. More details in our Trail Elf Guide. |
